In 1990s Wuhan, Ma Xuewu, an office director at a state-owned enterprise, and his wife Li Baoli, a street vendor in Hanzheng Street, live an ordinary family life with their son Xiaobao. After the company allocates them a new apartment, a series of unexpected and unfortunate events begin to occurr on the very day they move in: Ma Xuewu asks for a divorce, Li Baoli discovers her husband’s infidelity, and his homeless mother insists on moving into their new home. Overwhelmed by successive blows, Ma Xuewu commits suicide. Baoli’s close friend Xiaojing attributes all the misfortune to the poor feng shui of the new house, calling it "ten thousand arrows piercing the heart." But the stubborn and resilient Li Baoli refuses to give in, determined to hold her family together.
