Azariah’s prayer in the middle of the fire is a high point in the Old Testament. As a result of God’s punishment, all the institutions of Israel have disappeared, among them the Temple and the altar. Nothin has remained, by which to express Israel’s answer to God’s covenant. The last thing that remains is the very existence of the people. Azariah asks that the Lord accept their holocaust as a sacrifice he likes.
To offer ourselves to the Lord every moment of our lives is the greatest thing we can do. It is the meaning of our existence.
