Chapters 40 to 55 of the Book of Isaiah accompany the times of exile and first post-exile period of the group of Israelites deported to Babylon.
These chapters deliver a message of hope amid affliction for the collapse of the structures of Israelite society.
The prophet shows how other deities are just artistic objects devoid of life and power. He encourages the people to believe in the unique and powerful God, who has prepared a new Exodus for his chosen ones. He portrays the mysterious figure of a Servant who, even through his sufferings and unjust death, will bring about new life for his brothers and sisters.
Today, we read the last words of these chapters. The prophet invites his listeners to acknowledge that God’s ways are beyond human understanding. Therefore, they can trust in Him with absolute faith and be sure that his promises will become reality.
This is true for us too, today.
