“How can some of you be saying that there is no resurrection of the dead?”
How to understand this statement?
Among the many interpretations, I propose the following one.
Some of the Corinthians still hold on to a philosophical, abstract and universal statement while accepting the story of Jesus, because they think that the event of Jesus’ resurrection belongs to the realm of the stories of the gods. They do not see any contradiction between the two. People can at the same time accept that Jesus rose again (a unique historical event) and still maintain that there is no resurrection of the dead (a general and universal, philosophical statement).
However, in the most concise and irrefutable way, Paul destroys such statement. Indeed, when he says: “How can some of you…”, he shows that there are no abstract and universal statements, but only historical opinions of some people.
The importance of Paul’s words is incredible. He destroys every pretense of philosophical doctrines to be general and universally valid. They are just the opinion of somebody, an opinion that other philosophers will contradict, as the whole history of philosophy demonstrates.
What remains is the power of the unique and universal event that is Jesus.
