In chapter 9 of First Corinthians, Paul offers a set of proofs to justify his choice of renouncing to his sure knowledge and to his rights as an Apostle in view of the good of his brothers and sisters.
What we read today is a part of his argument. Paul first states that his call to be an Apostle is a great gift and makes of him not a creditor, but a debtor to God. He pays his debt by announcing the Gospel for free, even to the point of becoming the servant of all, in view of their salvation.
He then adds a further reason, the purpose of what he is doing: it is “in view of sharing in the Gospel with them.”
This is surprising: the Gospel is never a sure possession. It is always a call, a responsibility; there is always the risk of falling away from the Gospel.
The only way to possess Jesus is to live for Him.
