In chapters 8 to 10 of First Corinthians, Paul gives some answers to a difficult question regarding a concrete problem: is it permitted to eat meat that has been offered in the temples (practically, the greatest part of the meat sold in the markets)?.
In theory, the principle is clear: there are no other gods, only Jesus’ Father; therefore, to eat meat sacrificed in the temples does not bind to any god. After a prayer of blessing, Jesus’ believers may eat all kinds of food.
Problems arise when former pagans still feel that eating meat sacrificed to idols creates a bond with them. Therefore they do not dare eat meat and think that in doing so they betray their communion to Jesus.
At this point, Paul lets another principle take precedence: whatever a Chrisitan does should be not for his own advantage but for the good of the community. Therefore, he proclaims his decision: “if food causes my brother to sin, I will never eat meat.”
