August 27 Ordinary time Week 21 Thursday Saint Monica First Reading

In his thanksgiving report (it was customary to begin letters with a thanksgiving), Paul lists the gifts the community of Corinth has received.

In the following chapters, we discover that those gifts are in fact problems that need Paul’s correction and instruction.

At the end of the thanksgiving, Paul expresses the hope that God himself will make them perfect and unblemished.

The key point of the thanksgiving is Paul’s interpretation of Christian life.

We are called to communion with Jesus.

Perhaps, the Corinthians risked to understand Jesus in the Greek way, to consider Jesus as similar to some of the deities of Greek mythology, or as one of their philosophers.

That risk is ours today.

We are always in the dangerous risk of considering Jesus as a great master of the past, whereas He is the source of our life and we need to daily strive to deepen our union with Him.
