The prophet Amos is the first – as far as we know – to write down his oracles. Before him, the prophets did not feel the need to write. Why? Perhaps because people believed their words and accepted them as God’s oracles.
Amos, on the contrary, is rejected and must leave the Kingdom of the North. Therefore, he writes, with the hope that at least some people in the future will read and acknowledge his mission.
In the text we read today, Amos explains why he needs to speak: the Lord, like a roaring lion, makes him fear in terror and compels him to transmit his oracles.
He reviews a past event, some help the Lord gave to Israel, to denounce the stubbornness of the people: they did not convert from their evil. Therefore, the Lord’s next coming will be a terrible punishment.
Today we can learn to fear the Lord as Amos did and to be his faithful servants, even if this means going to counter other people’s ways of living and thinking.
