The prophet Amos reproaches the hypocrisy of the rich people of the North Kingdom. They oppress the poor and at the same time offer to God splendid feasts and offerings.
They think that God will be satisfied with their sacrifices and therefore allow them to continue in their exploitation of the poor.
In many places of the world things are very similar to the situation Amos criticizes. Many think that God can be bribed, as often they bribe public officers or politicians,
The basic question is: who needs whom? Is God in need of presents, or are humans in need of his salvation?
Many postpone the real problem, death. They think that if they grant themselves some more possibilities (such as money, pleasure and power), death will be postponed indefinitely, and with death the problem of the meaning of life and of what comes after death.
