June 20 Ordinary time Week 11 Saturday First Reading

The accounts about King Joash we read today are somehow different from what we read in the Second Book of Kings. In 2Kings we read that Joash repaired the Temple. Perhaps it was the beginning of the transformation of the Temple from being the great chapel of the king into becoming the sanctuary of the whole people. Anyway, according to both reports, King Joash was murdered in his house.

However, what Joash did to the son of the priest that saved him saddens us. Jesus too mentioned the killing of Zechariah “between the sanctuary and the altar.”

Gratitude is of paramount importance and give God the opportunity of bestowing ever greater graces upon us.

Greed for power at the expenses of justice and truth is as well wicked and brings about God’s punishment on the culprits and on all who acquiesce to them.
