Thursday of the Holy Week The Lord’s Supper Mass Second Reading

Jesus’ words on the Bread and on the Chalice are reported both in the Synoptic Gospels and in Paul.

However, that event could have been a once and for all event.

If we celebrate the Eucharist till now and hopefully till the return of the Lord, it is because in Luke and in Paul we find Jesus’ order to “do this.”

Jesus himself was the first to instruct us how to perform the Eucharist, when, after a long instruction to the two disciples, he entered with them in the inn, said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it too them. At that point the disciples recognized him.

We are called to “do this” not as much to remember him, but “as the memorial that belongs to him.”

His presence, his intention, his Passion, Death and Resurrection rule our celebration. We are moved by him, so that we become the announcement of his Paschal Mystery, Through us it is He who works the salvation of all times and people.
