首先，他提出一個否定性的命令：不要作惡；然後，他提出一個積極的勸勉。

這種順序有助於我們的屬靈生活：我們需要認識到，為了在靈性生活中取得進步，我們需要對一些邪惡的事物說“不”，從而為我們走上聖潔的道路騰出空間。

In the second part of Chapter four, and in the first part of Chapter five of the Letter to the Ephesians, Paul lists a set of exhortations. The heading of this section is “let us live according to love, following the truth.”

Indeed, part of the exhortations concerns inner attitudes, related to community life.

Another set of exhortations concerns the body and the duty of living according to chastity and all other virtues related to physical life.

In his exhortations, Paul consistently follows a clear pattern.

First, he presents a negative imperative: do not commit evil deeds; then, he introduces his positive exhortation.

This sequence helps us in our spiritual life: we need to acknowledge that, to progress in our spiritual life, we need to say some no’s to evil things, to open the space for our walking the way of holiness.
