October 04 Ordinary time Week 27 Sunday First Reading

This “Song of the Vineyard” is a literary masterpiece, because of the many layers of meaning and changes of comprehension it produces in the readers.

It starts as a love song: the vineyard receives an additional – and traditional – meaning: it represents the girlfriend, who does not respond to the love of his boyfriend.

However, when talking about the punishment, the boyfriend suddenly represents somebody else: somebody who is powerful enough to close the skies and not let the rain come.

So, the third meaning looms: the vineyard represents the people of Israel, who do not respond with fruits of justice to the love of God.

The listeners’ mood too changes: from smile at the love’s story, from agreeing to the punishment inflicted to the vineyard-girlfriend, they suddenly realize that they are condemning themselves in front of God’s love, to which they respond with oppression and violence.

In the NT, Jesus will use the same image of the vineyard, however with a huge change: in the OT the vineyard is the chosen people; in the Gospel, the Chosen people is just in charge of the vineyard, the Kingdom of Heaven: they can be excluded from it.
