A Reflection on today’s reading First Reading February 19 Thursday after Ash Wednesday

The Book of Deuteronomy witnesses the effort of keeping the exodus experience alive even when the people of Israel have settled in the Promised Land and become a people of farmers. The land is the holy witness of the covenant. God give his land to Israel every year. The cycle of agriculture is an every year renewed entrance to the promised land.

Together with ancient Israel, we too can see everything we have as God’s gift and the opportunity of serving Him in all that we do. In this way, even if we live in the midst of many things and enjoy them, in reality we are also detached from them and following God alone, as Israel did in the desert.
