The prophet proclaims an oracle of joy, even amid despair. Since the reigning king Achaz is betraying the God of Israel, the prophet announces the birth of a new king and on him appoints his hope for a new beginning, a renewal of the covenant. The prophet speaks of light shining in darkness, of a victory like that against Madian, when the sudden shining of torches threw the camp of the enemies into disarray and they killed each other.

The prophecy about the king is reflected on his mother, who offers such great hope to the people and to their posterity, to the final heir to the throne of David, Jesus.
