What we read today is only a short section of a long chapter. In it, the prophet bitterly reproaches Jerusalem because of her wanton behavior. After receiving all kinds of benefits from the Lord, she has become an adulteress, even paying for her lovers.
The prophet uses a very crude language, as a priest particularly committed to keep the holy purity, he is horrified by the behavior of the people. They abandon their trust in the Lord to rely on political alliances, thus becoming like other states, instead of being a people consecrated to the service of the Lord.
The Lord will punish all this in the most terrible way.
Still, Ezekiel announces something new: God’s forgiveness will not depend on conversion, on the contrary, it will be a gratuitous act creating conversion.
We find it in our lives every day: our conversion follows the creative forgiveness of the Lord. In this way, our gratitude will be mixed with confusion “and we in our confusion will be reduced to silence.”
