先知這象徵性舉動的意義顯而易見：上主渴望與祂的子民建立親密的關係。

然而，他們卻拒絕了。

因此，他們如同河中央的腰帶般腐爛。

他們因失去與上主的關係而失去了一切。

這就是每個人最終的結局。選擇其他偶像而非真神，就如同活著下地獄，在今生就已飽受地獄之苦：一種日益加劇的混亂和迷茫。

然而，在今天的經文中，有一個奇怪的細節：河流的名字。幼發拉河距離以色列很遠，超於800公里。

一些學者認為，這裡提到的「幼發拉河」指的是位於耶路撒冷以東不遠的恩普拉特（瓦迪凱爾特）。

The meaning of the symbolic action of the prophet is clear: the Lord wanted to create great intimacy between Himself and His people.

They did not accept. Therefore, they became rotten as the girdle in the middle of the river. They lost everything by losing their relationship with the Lord.

That is what happens to everybody. To choose other idols instead of the true God is to go down to hell alive and suffer hell already here, in the present life: a growing, chaotic confusion.

In today’s text, however, there is a strange detail: the name of the river. The river Euphrates is far away from Israel. Some scholars think that the word refers to Ein Prat (Wadi Kelt) not far away from Jerusalem, towards the East.
