July 13 Ordinary time Week 15 Monday First Reading

Why does Isaiah reproach the rich people of Jerusalem by calling them “people of Sodom and Gomorrah”?  Could he not choose another city that had been destroyed, such as for example Jericho or Ai?

Among the many possible reasons for the prophet choice, we can imagine this one: other cities had been destroyed by the people of Israel, so an oracle against the people by quoting cities that they had destroyed could not have a great effect.

Instead, Sodom and Gomorrah had been destroyed by God himself, with a terrible punishment: they descended alive into hell, consumed by the fire. Such an example would be more effective.

We need also remember that the only sin mentioned in the Bible for these two cities was homosexuality. See the Letter of Judah, 7: “Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise acted immorally and indulged in unnatural lust, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.”
