July 07 Ordinary time Week 14 Tuesday First Reading

According to what we read today, it looks that even in the capital city of Samaria there was an idol, a calf, in the same way as the idol in the shrine of Betel.

We do not know exactly what the forms of the religion of the North Kingdom were, before the Assyrian conquest. However, we see that the prophet Hosea sees this as a refusal of the God of Israel, even if they offer sacrifices to him and think that they are adoring him. The form of the idol is changing their faith.

Inside the prohibition of having an imagine of God looms an important warning: whatever image, whatever idea of God we can have, the risk is great to adore an idol, a mental idol, instead of God. The only image of God is Jesus. Jesus is not a work of human hands, he is alive in us and asks us to learn from him, continually.
