July 05 Ordinary time Week 14 Sunday First Reading

A special feeling went unchanged through the whole history of Israel: among them there is no one superior to any other. Even those who are in power, even kings knew that and respected the fundamental brotherhood linking all the members of the people.

Under this respect, what Zechariah foresees is not a strange ideal; rather, the king the hopes for is the normal king of Israel, the one who embodies the attitudes of a standard king among the Chosen People.

When Jesus enters Jerusalem, he fulfills that expectation. Indeed, he does not bring about a political change that leaves everything as it was, or even worse. He changes the relationships among people, without any useless political reshuffling. What he brings is fraternity in his name, a relational standard where everybody counts,

To do that, political units need to be small; of paramount importance is that the communication between those in power and the others be direct, without recourse to the media. The media, that is, an indirect communication, a mediated communication, is the tool that allows those in power to be above their brothers and sisters, creating a caste.
