May 15 Sixth Week of Easter Friday First Reading

Gallio was governor in Corinth about the year 51 AD. This information helps us to know when Paul was in Corinth and when he wrote the First Letter to the Thessalonians, the first work of the New Testament,

Luke reports the decision of Gallio to prove that the discussions between the Jews and the believers in Jesus do not fall within the competence of the Roman law, therefore the Jews have no right to sue the disciples of Jesus in front of Roman judges (Luke perhaps thinks of the process against Paul in Rome).

Paul walks in front of Jesus, not in front of human laws (which do not want to interfere, anyway). There is a space of freedom where no human institution has the right to enter. It is the space that belongs to Jesus (who, by the way, is the absolute Lord of every human power) and to our relationship with him.
