April 20 Monday of the Third Week of Easter First Reading

The accusations that we hear against St. Steven are almost the same as the ones the priests leveled against Jesus. Basically, these accusations show the fear every culture feels when confronted with the risk of becoming less important than the personal relationship with Jesus. This fear in turn shows that cultures want to be considered divine and absolute. When somebody discovers that the love Jesus offers him is greater than what any culture can give, then for him culture is not anymore the source of his identity. We, who believe in Jesus, do not refuse our culture; it simply becomes our way to belong to Jesus. After all, the words of the thief to Jesus have a decisive importance: Lord, please remember me. Jesus remembers us forever. Is any culture able to do something similar for us?
