After God, the main character of this reading seems to be the covenant. It will stay with Abraham, like a friend, like a source of meaning for his life, like a guardian angel.
The covenant is the presence of God in the life of Abraham and of all his offspring.
At the same time, such presence on the side of God calls for a reciprocal presence on the side of Abraham.
The inner attitude of being present is at the same time a visible behavior.
Worth of marvel is the fact that by observing the covenant Abraham and his descendants seem to be timeless: time for them does not exist anymore, what remains forever is their observance. They become the act of their union with God.
