The interpretation of this famous text from the Book of Job is difficult.
Who exactly is the Avenger/ Redeemer?
How to interpret the situation of Job when he – hopefully – will see God?
Will he be “in” his flesh?
Or will he be “from” his flesh, that is “without” his flesh?
There is one translation of the LXX (Claude E. Cox) that reads:
“To be sure, I know that he who is about to undo me on earth is everlasting. May my skin, which patiently endures these things, rise up; for these things have been accomplished on me by the Lord”.
However, the Latin translation conveys a different message: “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the last day I shall rise out of the earth. And I shall be clothed again with my skin, and in my flesh, I shall see my God. Whom I myself shall see, and my eyes shall behold, and not another: this my hope is laid up in my bosom”.
In any case, we can feel that this text conveys hope. It has been read as a sort of prophecy about the resurrection of the dead, and we can still receive it according to this traditional interpretation.
