March 24 Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Lent

The story narrated in today’s first reading is full of hidden meanings. First, for the first time in the story of Exodus, the people confess that they have sinned against the Lord.

Thus, the deepest root causing all negative consequences in the relationship with God comes to the light. It takes courage to accept in front of ourselves, in front of truth, of our conscience and of God, that we have sinned.

Second, the remedy is surprising. What God requires is simply a glance, a look on a bronze snake hanging on a pole. The remedy of poisoning passes through a cursed snake that resembles the snakes that were the cause of it.

These details prepare the event of redemption and help to understand the way Jesus redeemed us.
