Where does fasting come?Perhaps the origins of such a behavior were simply hunger. Many cultures and religions have fasting among their rituals. By suspending ordinary life, those who fast try to connect to a higher or inner dimension, of which they feel the mysterious presence and fascination.
Perhaps, such and similar desires were in the background of the text of Isaiah read today.
However, the prophet clearly proposes another way to get closer to God: social harmony, fighting poverty and its causes, creating an environment of reciprocal love and respect.
From the wording of the texts, it is easy to conclude that the prophet was speaking to a class of rich people, that then as now are among the principal causes of social problems.
Fasting from greed is much more difficult than fasting from food.
