July 31 Ordinary time Week 17 Friday Saint Ignatius of Loyola First Reading

The public warning Jeremiah delivers at the entrance of the Temple of Jerusalem echoes the warning quoted in Ch. 7. In Ch. 7 the speech of the prophet seems to be a general introduction to the time in which Jeremiah suffered under the king Jehoiakim, while today’s report is framed into a historical context. Indeed, we read about the reaction of the rulers of Jerusalem. They want to kill the prophet because of his words.

As many wicked people do, they intentionally miss the point, which is the invitation to conversion.

They do not have any second thoughts about their behavior. For them, it is good, because it brings success and riches.

Whereas, for the prophet, justice depends on God and obedience to His will.

When things are polarized in such an extreme way, only one factor can change the locked situation: death. The death of the prophet, as it will happen for Jesus; the death of the wicked, at the hands of some more powerful than they are.
