This text offers the key to understand the drama of the prophet Hosea and the theological message which is at the same time the source and the fruit of his experience.
God first describes how he loved Israel: the Exodus (the experience of some clans) is portrayed as the expression of the tender love of a father for his little son.
Then God is faced with the infidelity of the people: shall he punish them?
God decides to forgive them, “because I am God and not simply a man:” his love does not change because they betray him. His love remains unshaken and thus shows his divine power.
From this we learn how to imitate our Father in Heaven, as Hosea did by forgiving his wife.
